About Alchemy Australia

Alchemy Australia first started producing aluminium racing frames in 1991, we were using the industry standard 6061-T6 alloy and Columbus' first alloy tube set, which was a double butted 5086 alloy called Altec.

Between 1992 and 1994 we found our place in the market was road and track bikes which is where we worked hard to produce the best bicycle frames available. To achieve this goal we worked very closely with many elite riders as well as listening to recreational and club level racers to fine tune our geometry. We also looked to other aluminium tube manufacturers such as Easton who have a long standing history in hi-tech alloy tube extrusion, their Elite tube set (now named Ultralite) gave us the next level in frame rigidity and light weight.

In early 1996 we started to produce a road frame with a sloping top tube like a mountain bike. We don't claim to be the first to produce what is now known as a compact frame, but we certainly were learning from our own experience more so than copying someone else's design. With the compact design frame we were now overcoming one of aluminiums cons, comfort.

We could build very responsive frames, but they would beat up the rider over longer distances. By redirecting the plane that the road shock traveled through the frame and on to the rider, we could gain shock absorbing characteristics within the frame. A compact design frame gives better lateral stiffness but has better vertical compliance for rider comfort, it's a win win situation.

We have made our compact frames with less drop in the top tube due to the UCI moving to ban compact frames in 2000. Their reason for banning the compact design was their dislike to the non traditional shape and no other reason. So due to the threat of compact frames being banned for racing we work within the guidelines of the UCI rulebook of 2000.

We don't want our customers to find that their much loved bikes are not legal for racing and need to be replaced prematurely. Over the last few years we have been working with the latest alloy tubing available, and also using bonding techniques to bring the use of carbon fibre stays to custom made frames.

In the near future we will bring more technology from other Hi-Tech fabrication industries such as Cryogenic treatment. This de-stressing process will give a longer life to ultra lightweight frames. We are always looking for new technologies to improve our frames, but we will only implement such processes when proven to be of benefit to the rider.
